I Mana Ka ʻŌiwi: The Importance of Indigenous Approaches and Practices in Education

The United Nations (UN) describes an indigenous peoples as “…holders of unique languages, knowledge systems and beliefs that possess invaluable knowledge of practices for sustainable management of natural resources” (United Nations, 2004). Although the UN has not adopted an official definition of the term “indigenous,” many cultural groups such as Indigenous Education State Leaders Network (IESLN) and the American Institutes for Research (ARI) have identified indigenous people as communities and individuals who associate themselves with a pre-colonial and or pre-settler society (ARI, 2023). This includes communities such as and not limited to the Native Hawaiians, Alaska Natives and American Indians. Historically these communities have been forcibly removed from their homelands and demanded to assimilate to a western culture imposed upon them. As students, indigenous peoples require support and resources that cater to their cultural needs and empower them to be successful in a western society. Join our hui (group) of Native Hawaiian panelists for a discussion on the ways in which our identities have shaped our own educational and professional experiences. As we reflect on our own experiences we will share our concerns for indigenous students in secondary and post secondary education. We will offer thoughtful perspectives on Native Hawaiian educational history, what it means to have indigenous counseling, and the idea of indigenous excellence. Join us for an important and intentional dialogue about indigeneity. Collaborate and network with educational partners to support in the building of strategies and best practices for working with indigenous students in secondary and post secondary education.
