Hawai`i ACAC High School Counselor Workshop

Hawai`i ACAC, Marist College, and Mid-Pacific Institute is sponsoring a professional development day on October 22, 2017 for high school counselors. We have put together a great day piggybacking on events that are already happening that day including the Hawai`i ACAC Honolulu Art Portfolio Day (see other event posting), University of California Information Session and College Fair (see other event posting), and the Admission Case Study Program sponsored by Dickinson, Lafayette, Marist, Richmond, and Trinity.  

Marist College has graciously volunteered to sponsor our snacks and lunch for the day. To give us an idea as to who is coming and how much food to order and to plan four our sessions, please REGISTER HERE

9:00 - 9:30 Introduction to Art Schools / Art Portfolio Day (Wood Hall)

  • You’re invited to sit-in on the Hawai`i ACAC Honolulu Art Portfolio Day. Representatives from art schools will give a general overview of their program followed by individual student portfolio reviews.

9:45 - 10:45 Session I (Please select one session)

  • College Admission 101
    This session will focus on supporting your students from the 9th grade on and the importance of academic planning, testing, extracurricular activities.
  • Recommendation Writing 101
    What should counselors say about students in a letter of recommendation? Gain tips on recommendations to support your students in the college admission process from the folks who will be reading them. What do you include, what not to include?

11:00 - 12:00 Session II (Please select one session)

  • Supporting your Students with their Essays/Personal Statements
    Essays and personal statements tell stories that enhance students’ applications. The essay gives your students the opportunity to personalize their application. Our admission colleagues will share some guidance on supporting your students.
  • College Applications – Insight to the University of California, Oregon State University, Common Applications
    This session will provide you with tips to assist your students with the UC, OSU, and Common Application.

1:00 - 2:00 Session III (Please select one session)

  • University of California Overview (Bakken Auditorium)
    Counselors are invited to learn more about the University of California system, campuses and admission requirements. (This session is also open to the general public)
  • Navigating the Art School Admission Process
    Hawai`i ACAC has been supporting the Honolulu Art Portfolio Day for the last few years. Fine and performing arts schools have specific requirements regarding auditions or portfolios. Learn how to assist your students in the “arts” application process.

2:15 - 3:15 Session IV

  • Counseling Round Table Discussion – What Keeps You Up at Night?
    Sit with colleagues and bring up issues that concern you, ideas to share, tools of the trade that work for you, etc.

3:30 - 5:00 Session V

  • Admission Case Studies Program
    Members of Lafayette University, Marist College, etc. will be leading an admissions case studies program. Participants will be read applications and make admission decisions. This
    exercise will show participants how schools read applications, review materials submitted and make their decisions. (This program is open to the general public)
